The Journal #4: Daily Reminder - Don’t Let Your Nerves Win
As my onboarding period draws to an end, I feel the nerves creep in ever so slightly. The one thing that keeps me up at night will always be how new and challenging my job scope is for me, I never would have imagined myself being in a position where I would be interacting with strangers on a daily basis. But it is also important to remember that being uncomfortable means growth, and that’s what I am here for - to learn new things and grow as a media practitioner.
My biggest takeaway this week would be having attended a workshop, on things to take note when dealing with high net worth clients. I went in without much expectations, and I came out learning so much. This is by no means an exaggeration, but as someone who thrives on structure, it was very useful for me to gain insights into building a structure for sales pitching that works for me. More often than not, my nerves stem from my lack of knowledge and lack of structure that leaves me open and vulnerable to the unknown. It has been very useful for me to sit in, listen and learn from more experienced people about my job and role.
This week also saw the beginning of my cold calling experience. I am very self-conscious and nervous about cold calling due to my introverted nature, so it is a very challenging task for me to do. Planning and reading up about how to cold call helped in equipping me with better skills in approaching a conversation but there’s still a lot for me to learn. I hope as I continue calling more and more people, my confidence increases.
On a lighter note, I also handled my first inbound inquiry. The call went pretty well, or so I thought. There were things I missed out on during the phone call that were essential for the production team in understanding what to propose, but it was a great learning experience for me as it taught me the right questions to ask. I do feel in situations like these, I am less nervous as it’s different from talking to someone might not have a clue as to why I am calling.
All in all, the past one month has given me many opportunities to learn and grow from. Though I am still lacking in certain areas, I believe I will eventually be better.
