The Journal #1: Where do I begin?

Updated: Feb 17

Writing out my thoughts and feelings as a blog is an extremely foreign experience that I have never once craved. I might write this out from a journalist kind of tone and attempt to express myself in ways other than an adjective, so I suppose I seek your understanding as I journal my thoughts in this blog.

My name is Alicia and I am a 20 years old fresh graduate from Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Mass Communication batch of 2019. Specialising in social media strategies, online journalism, and creative writing, I did my school attachment/internship in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for 6 months. My strong suit will definitely be advertising in terms of project management, design, and writing.

At Cinema Verite Pictures (CVP), my role is a Media Sales Executive tasked with essentially building relationships with people and bringing the company more $$$. P.S. If you are reading this and interested in working with us, feel free to drop me an email :D

As an INTJ-T (MBTI) with Melancholic and Choleric temperaments (Hippocrates), I am not the most sociable or friendly person in the world. Therefore, taking up the challenge of doing sales with CVP was a very daunting decision to say the least, but I convinced myself that if I let internet tests tell me how to live my life, I would be no different from a person in jail. (A very inappropriate analogy, I am aware and I apologise in advance)

If you’ve dived deep into the MBTI Personalities, you would know as a turbulent INTJ means I am afraid of E V E R Y T H I N G. I am afraid to fail, to make mistakes, to make wrong choices, of big changes, of everything in general.

So the biggest challenge was definitely my lack of experience and knowledge about the “World of Sales”. In many ways, it requires very different skills to marketing or advertising. Doing sales demands me to be more proactive and I think I am adjusting well with Chris being there to teach me how to build a strong foundational understanding of it. Having the opportunity to attend BNI Crescendo with Jeremiah, a closed door networking event, has also exposed me to a platform where I can feel safe in my growth as a practitioner.

Contrary to my worries, my first week has been nothing short of exciting. Under the guidance of Jeremiah and Chris, it gets less worrying and scary as the days pass. From being greeted by the cheerful disposition of Chris every morning, to the friendliness of everyone in the team, I am excited to learn more and be better at my job.

My loved ones are aware of my spiralling nature and have been my biggest cheerleaders throughout times like these. But it feels good to be accepted into an inclusive community like CVP and be able to keep my spiralling under control. It makes me focus more on the positives of what I can learn and achieve with this role, instead of being afraid to speak and approach people.

I am glad I took the opportunity to apply for the Skillsfuture Earn and Learn Programme with Ngee Ann Polytechnic and have the chance to work for an awesome company like CVP. I will leave you with a haiku to wrap up my thoughts and feelings on my first week working at CVP.

In due time, I hope.

Before I end, let me introduce you to my biggest cheerleader.

My baby, SOCKS (cause her white paws look like she’s wearing socks uwu)

To the one who licks my toes when I’m stressed out and sad, what more could I ask for.

With all that’s been shared, I hope it has been insightful and interesting to read. That’s a wrap from me!
